Overcoming the Weight Bias in Healthcare

DESCRIPTION: Oftentimes a patient’s weight can affect the way they are treated among healthcare professionals. This presentation will explore why a weight bias is present in the healthcare field and how it affects patient care. It will also explore how healthcare professionals can reduce their weight bias in order to better support and treat their patients. OBJECTIVES: At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
Identify the root of weight bias in the healthcare field
Identify consequences that weight bias by healthcare professionals can have on patients
Discuss ways to how healthcare professionals can reduce weight bias in their own practice
S. Umamah Fatima, MS, RDN, LDN, CEDRD
Umamah Fatima is a Registered Dietitian at Monte Nido, a residential treatment program for eating disorders. She recently obtained her certification as a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian (CEDRD) through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals. As a CEDRD, Umamah hopes to help others rebuild a peaceful relationship with food and their body through intuitive eating and principles of health at every size. She enjoys traveling as it allows her to experience different cultures, traditions and food.
